REP Holding Specialists Presented Energy Saving Projects at the Forum Dedicated to Metallurgy and Engineering Issues in Russia

REP Holding specialists participated in the all-Russia Conference "Energy Supply, Energy Saving, Automation of Metallurgical and Machinery Production” held on May 12, 2016 in Chelyabinsk.

The dialog platforms of the Forum brought together representatives of top management, chief power engineers, engineers, heads of energy saving centers of large metallurgical enterprises, such as JSC "MMK", PJSC "Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant", OJSC «Severstal», JSC «CHTPZ”, JSC “Evraz ZSMK” and others, as well as experts, leading technical experts of service and engineering companies.

The participants discussed the situation in the metallurgical and machine-building industries, recognizing the issues of modernization and implementation of energy saving technologies as top-priorities for the production development.

Technical projects and innovations that can contribute to reducing energy consumption of production processes and improve profitability were presented at the event.

Deputy Head of the REP Holding Turbo-machines Testing and Diagnostics subdivision Grigory Uflyand presented in his report the advanced technology for the metallurgical industry, highlighting the project of top- pressure recovery turbine (GUBT). The unit is used to generate electric power, utilizing excess pressure of the blast furnace gas.

Unlike previous generations of GUBT, the new unit has a number of advantages, the main one being high efficiency at partial loads in a wide range of flow and gas pressure, achieved through the use of nozzle governing. Application of blast furnace gas that does not need preheating saves fuel, simplifies operation and increases the industrial safety. According to preliminary estimation the payback period of the GUBT does not exceed three years.

The speaker mentioned as an example the experience of GUBT application at Cherepovets Steel Mill. The unit manufactured at Nevskiy Zavod (part of REP Holding) provides up to 30% of the energy needed for blast furnace air blast. The cost of the produced electricity is, on average, 10-15% of the tariff.
